This flower was blooming in the garden on the day my oldest daughter was married, so it holds a special place in my heart. When I see a red hibiscus I always want to pick it and put it behind my ear. That’s what I did when I first discovered them on a trip to Hawaii when I was in my early thirties. I have always loved the rich, intense color of their petals and how they invite you into their very centers. This is a good one to lose yourself in — I did, a lot, while I was painting it!

The first time I encountered this flower, I was on my honeymoon and was greeted with a plumeria lei when I arrived in Hawaii with my new husband. The scent of the plumeria lei was so intoxicating and exotic and I am transported back to that memory when I look at this painting. It was really fun to paint!

I have always loved violas and pansies. All pansies are actually violas but not all violas are pansies, something I didn’t learn until recently. This one was growing in the planter outside my studio window and I was drawn to the beautiful shading of blue on the outside to the yellow of its center. I knew when I saw it, that I had to put it up on my easel.

Sunflower with Bee

Our garden had a lot of sunflowers this year and they really pulled me toward them when I went outside. As I got close to this one, I noticed a bee that had also been drawn in close. Sunflowers just might be one of the happiest looking flowers in the garden.

There is a gorgeous vine that grows outside my living room and in summer it becomes filled with these intensely purple flowers. I picked this one and it spent a few days in my kitchen window. I loved how the light from outside illuminated its petals.

I’ve been impressed by showy Phalaenopsis plants (also known as moth orchids) for years. I was delighted when I discovered how easy it is to grow them. They come in an amazing variety of colors and sizes and can be quite affordable, especially when you realize the blooms can last several months. For these, and numerous other reasons, I absolutely love them.

I was taken by how tight the bud was in the center of this rose as the outer petals slowly began to unfold around it. I also loved the delicate peach tones of the rose itself. I thought this flower was perfect in a square format, something I don't often do.

Yellow Rose

Yellow roses have always been my favorite, possibly because of the sweet smell of peaches some of them have. This particular rose felt so soft and lush to me. The petals, as I painted them. seemed almost like lovely yellow clouds as they softly unfolded themselves.

Mystic’s Rose and Agapanthus

This pale pink rose was from a bush I planted in my backyard when I lived in Windsor, California. It ended up growing about 7’ tall (it was a freestanding bush, not a climber!) and for about nine months a year it produced huge, lush, intoxicatingly fragrant flowers. I loved how it looked next to the agapanthus in that garden.

This painting started it all — The Flower Collection. This vase, from a dear friend, sat in my kitchen window with these daffodils and I was struck by how the light from outside illuminated both the vase and the blooms. I accidentally moved the camera as I got ready to take a photo of them and I loved the play of light and movement I captured. As I got into the painting, and really started layering in color, it ignited something in me that made me want to keep going and paint more flowers.
